Registration is now open for the US National Toboggan Championships!
Camden has long been known as the place “where the mountains meet the sea.” This geographic configuration makes for a beautiful harbor framed by the scenic Camden Hills. That alone is worth a visit.
It also gives the Camden Snow Bowl, a town-owned, family friendly ski area on Ragged Mountain, the only downhill ski trails from which you can view the ocean. This claim to fame makes Camden even MORE worth a winter visit.
But wait, there’s more: there’s the 400-foot toboggan chute! For some good clean fun on a winter weekend, you can rent a toboggan at the Snow Bowl and enjoy the ten-second thrill of zipping down the chute onto frozen Hosmer Pond.
Visit on February 9 – 11, 2018, and you can participate in the party-on-ice that is the US National Toboggan Championships! This crazy weekend, perhaps the world’s only wooden toboggan competition, attracts hundreds of competitors who participate on two-, three-, and four-person teams. And it attracts even more spectators, drawn to the fast-paced competition, festival atmosphere, and imaginative costumes worn by competitors. Food and souvenir vendors line the path to the chute, and the cold in no way inhibits ongoing parties on the ice and snow.
So try something new this winter: get some friends together and sign up! Registration is first-come, first-served, and fills up fast.
Not willing to risk life and limb on the icy chute? Come cheer on those who are!
Several of our comfortable homes for rent are within walking distance of the $2 bus that shuttles between downtown Camden and the Snow Bowl that weekend. Bring some friends and explore the town. A house in Camden is the perfect base from which to enjoy Winterfest, the week of winter festivities that culminates in the big event out at the Snow Bowl.
Winterfest offers its own share of cold weather fun right in downtown Camden: ice-carving, snow sculptures, a snow plow parade, a chili competition, fireworks, and live music. Here on the Maine coast, we really know how to enjoy winter. Come join us!
