Make the most of the Camden Windjammer Festival!
Summer goes out with a bang here in midcoast Maine over Labor Day weekend. Literally. The Camden Windjammer Festival, which takes place in Camden Harbor and on the Public Landing from Friday, September 2 through Sunday, September 4, features music and maritime merriment for all ages—including fireworks over the harbor on Friday night!
Camden is famous for its fleet of historic, two-masted, wooden sailing ships called windjammers or schooners. (The local high school team is, in fact, the Windjammers.) Friday afternoon, you can take in the parade of these majestic tall ships through Camden Harbor while enjoying a cocktail on the deck of one of Camden’s many harbor-side restaurants. That evening, enjoy live music by the Bay Winds North Wind Ensemble in Harbor Park, followed by the Schooner Talent Show featuring crew members of the local schooners. Be sure to grab a good spot in the park or along the harbor to watch the fireworks show, which starts at 9:00 pm.
Saturday kicks off with a pancake breakfast on the Public Landing offered by the Camden Rotary Club. Harbor activities throughout the day include the Lobster Crate Race, a Nautical Dog Show, pirates, storytelling, kayak trips to Curtis Island, face painting, live music, a water rescue demo by the Camden Fire Department, the Chowder Challenge hosted by West Bay Rotary Club over lunchtime, Darling’s Ice Cream Truck for a Cause, a fish relay, schooner open houses in the afternoon, and live music in Harbor Park. You can also sign up for to build a boat with provided materials to participate in the Build-a-Boat Parade and Race held the next morning. Noel Paul Stookey, of 1960s folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary, will perform Saturday night at the Camden Opera House.
And there’s no slowing down on the final day of festivities. Sunday features a radio-controlled boat race, a lobster hauling demo, the Build-a-Boat parade and race, more kayaking trips to Curtis Island, additional schooner open houses, boat models on display, more pirate shenanigans, and windjammer mate certification for kids 8 – 13, all capped off with the Boat Parade Finale. Sunday night you can take in a blues concert by James Montgomery and the Nor’easters at the Camden Opera House.
